The Insight family
Ultra sits alongside the upscaled modules
Insight is a family of compatible simulation modules. Each module fits a different stage of the completion engineering workflow, and results flow between them.
Fastest
Single Zone & Multi Zone
Upscaled valve representations for fast completion design and reservoir simulator export. The day-to-day workhorse for most completion studies.
Most detailed
Ultra
Fully transient, full physics along the wellbore. For transient behaviour, phase-dependent valve response, shut-in and restart, and tracer analysis.
Earliest stage
Insight Quick Look (IQL)
Analytical reservoir-to-surface model for rapid concept screening. Built for pre-FEED where grid-based simulation is too slow.
Before installation
Design completions under realistic conditions
Used before a well is drilled or a completion is run, Ultra answers the questions that steady-state models cannot: how the completion actually behaves in transient operation, and where phase-dependent valve response will help or hurt.
Compare completion designs under realistic conditions
Test competing completion strategies with the full transient physics, not just a steady-state snapshot. See how each design responds to start-up, ramp-up, and rate changes before a single joint is run.
Phase-dependent valve behaviour
For completions where AICD or AICV response depends on the phase in the annulus, Ultra resolves the annular segregation and the valve response in the same simulation. Decide between competing designs on the basis of how they actually behave, not on the steady-state assumption.
Dynamic phase redistribution during shut-in and restart
Model what happens in the annulus between shut-in and restart, phase migration, slug formation, and the restart transient. Identify whether a completion design creates operational risk before it is installed.
After installation
Diagnose existing wells against measured data
Once a well is producing, Ultra becomes a diagnostic tool. Combined with PLT, tracer, or production data, it lets engineers reconstruct what the well is actually doing and why.
Diagnose production issues
Use Ultra alongside PLT and production data to understand why a well is behaving the way it is. The full transient model lets you test hypotheses against measurements and isolate the cause.
Well cleanup operations
Simulate well cleanup transients to plan the operation, size the facilities, and predict when the well reaches stable flow. Reduce uncertainty in the cleanup schedule.
Well stability issues
For wells that cycle, slug, or show erratic production behaviour, Ultra resolves the transient mechanisms, gas coning, water slugging, annulus instabilities, that steady-state models miss entirely.
Tracer design and analysis
Ultra now includes a full tracer analysis module built on first-principles release physics. We expect it to become the preferred tool for tracer design and chemical PLT interpretation in AICD and AICV completions.

Full transient equations, not upscaled
Most simulation tools for advanced completions rely on upscaled valve representations that reduce the problem to a set of lookup tables. That is the right choice for reservoir-scale simulation, and Insight Single Zone and Multi Zone are built for exactly that. Ultra is for when the transient physics itself is the subject of the study.
- Full transient multiphase flow equations solved along the entire wellbore
- Tubing, annulus, and completion hardware resolved as one coupled system
- Annular phase segregation captured in the transient solution, not only at steady state
- Dynamic valve response for ICD, AICD, and AICV over time, not just end-state behaviour
- Start-up, shut-in, and restart transients resolved with full physics
- Fully compatible with the Insight Single Zone and Multi Zone modules
